CERAMIC TILE
While Ceramic tile and Porcelain tile are similar and are often used interchangably, there are some good differences for good reasons. Ceramic tile is fired in the Kiln at a much lower temperature and makes for a great, multipuropose, general-use tile for a great price. Often it's used in places like foyers and other general rooms, both upstairs and downstairs.
PORCELAIN TILE
Porcelain tile does separate itself from general Ceramic tile in a number of ways. First, it is fired in the kiln at a much higher temperature and is made from slighly different materials from regular ceramic tile. This process results in a few differences. Porcelain tile is lighter, it is more water resistant, and it is quality controlled by a certification organization. The other key difference is in price. Porcelain is usually more expensive because it is designed to hold up in harsher conditions like bathrooms.
